SINHARAJA RAIN FOREST
Sinharaja Rainforest, located in the southwest lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka, spans across the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces. It is widely recognized as the country’s last viable stretch of primary tropical rainforest and is an invaluable biodiversity hotspot. Covering an area of approximately 11,000 hectares of both primary and secondary forests, Sinharaja is characterized by a unique topography featuring a series of ridges and valleys, creating an intricate network of habitats.
What makes Sinharaja truly special is its remarkable endemicity. Over 60% of the tree species found here are endemic, with many classified as rare or endangered. The forest is not only a botanical treasure trove but also a vital refuge for a plethora of wildlife. It is home to over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies, along with a rich array of insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Birdwatchers, in particular, find Sinharaja to be a paradise, as it harbors numerous endemic bird species that are unique to this region.
Due to its ecological significance and unparalleled biodiversity, Sinharaja was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 under the name Sinharaja Forest Reserve. The forest was first recognized in 1936 as the only significant patch of virgin tropical rainforest remaining in Sri Lanka, further cementing its status as a critical natural reserve that requires ongoing conservation efforts.
